Same-Week Scheduling
The narrow focus is deliberate. A mason might get up on ten chimney tops in a season. We're up there most working days, in the same weather, seeing the same problems turn up again and again. It adds up.
What Does an Exterior Chimney Specialist Actually Do?
Most chimney-top problems are difficult to diagnose from the ground. Water in the firebox, staining near the chimney, a cap that looks crooked, rust streaks on siding, or birds nesting in chimney openings can all point to different exterior components.
Our job is to inspect the top of the system and separate those possibilities. That includes the cap, chase cover, crown, crown seal, upper exterior chimney, flashing, and immediate roof transition. We then recommend the specific service that addresses the failure rather than treating every symptom as the same problem.
Caps, chase covers, crowns. We install them, replace them, and repair them. That's the whole list.

Chimney Cap Installation and Replacement
Chimney cap installation is the foundation of the service line. If a flue is uncapped, the right cap helps shed rain, block birds and animals, limit debris entry, and protect the opening from direct weather exposure. The cap has to be measured, sized, and attached correctly for the chimney and exposure.
Chimney cap replacement is appropriate when an existing cap is rusted through, damaged, missing, blown off, structurally deformed, or simply the wrong size. We do not automatically replace a cap that can still be repaired. If the metal is sound and the failure is limited to hardware, screen, or attachment, chimney cap repair may be the better answer.
How We Size and Fit a Cap
We measure the exterior dimensions of the flue tile, the exposed height, the number and spacing of flues, and the condition of the surrounding crown. Those measurements determine whether a standard single-flue cap, clamp-style system, outside-mount cap, or custom solution makes sense.
The goal is a cap that seats correctly, stays secure in shoreline wind, clears the flue properly, and sheds water without creating new problems at the crown.
When Repair Makes Sense
- Reseating and refastening a loose cap
- Replacing damaged or missing hardware
- Replacing torn or corroded screen when the cap body remains sound
- Correcting attachment problems that do not require a new cap
When Replacement Makes More Sense
- The metal has rusted through
- The cap is badly bent or storm damaged
- The cap is the wrong size for the flue
- The attachment system repeatedly fails because the original cap or mounting method is not appropriate
We've been working the Connecticut shoreline since 1986, and that time in one stretch of coastline teaches you things you can't really pick up elsewhere. A friction-fit cap tends not to make it through a winter on an exposed lot in Old Saybrook. A lot of the older stacks in Guilford and Essex were built with flue openings that no off-the-shelf cap will sit on properly. And galvanized steel that gives you fifteen good years inland can rust through in four when the house is close to the water.
We'll let you know, book you in for after the season, and there's no charge for the visit that found it.
316 stainless steel
Marine grade, with added molybdenum that resists the chloride pitting salt air causes. Worth the upgrade on exposed coastal lots in East Haven, Branford, Old Lyme, and East Lyme.
Custom Chimney Caps
Custom chimney caps are used when the flue dimensions, crown layout, chimney design, or exposure make a standard off-the-shelf cap a poor fit. Older chimneys and larger chimney tops often benefit from a cap fabricated to the actual measurements rather than adapted from a generic size.
Custom fabrication also lets us match the material, mounting style, number of flues, and finished appearance to the property instead of forcing the chimney to fit the product.
Multi-Flue Chimney Caps
A multi flue chimney cap can protect multiple flue openings with one properly sized outside-mount assembly. This is often useful when individual caps would crowd one another or when a larger custom cap provides better coverage across the top of the chimney.
Custom multi-flue chimney caps are measured to the actual crown and flue layout so the finished piece has the necessary clearances, secure attachment, and drainage.
Copper Chimney Caps
Copper chimney caps are a premium option for homeowners who want strong corrosion resistance and a distinctive architectural finish. Copper develops a natural patina over time and can work especially well where the property already uses copper gutters, roof details, or other exterior metalwork.
We treat copper as a material choice within the custom-cap service, not as a separate type of chimney company.
Stainless Steel Chimney Caps
A stainless steel chimney cap is one of the strongest general-purpose options for CT Shoreline exposure. Stainless resists corrosion better than basic galvanized metal and is available for standard, custom, and multi-flue applications.
For exposed properties, the grade, gauge, fabrication, and attachment matter as much as the material name. We recommend the specification that fits the chimney and environment rather than selling the same cap to every home.

Chimney Chase Cover Replacement
Chimney chase cover replacement applies to framed and sided chimney chases where the large metal top has rusted, failed, or stopped shedding water correctly. A chase cover is different from a flue cap. It protects the entire top of the chimney chase around the flue pipe or pipes.
A rusted chimney chase cover can develop pinholes, failed seams, standing water, or leakage around the flue collar. By the time orange staining appears on the siding, water may already be entering the chase below.
What We Install Instead
- A cover fabricated to the actual chase dimensions
- Stainless steel or copper where appropriate
- Cross-broken or otherwise pitched construction so water sheds away from the center
- A proper drip edge that carries runoff clear of the siding
- Correctly sized and sealed flue collars
- Seams and transitions designed to keep water out of the chase
We measure the chase dimensions, number and position of flue pipes, collar sizes, and drainage needs before the replacement cover is fabricated.
Caps, chase covers, crowns. We install them, replace them, and repair them. That's the whole list.

Why Caps Fail on the Shoreline
- If your crown is solid and the cap just needs refastening, refastening is the whole quote
- If the crown really does need repair, you get photos from the roof showing you why
- We're on chimney tops most working days, across the same thirteen shoreline towns
- We know which mounting styles hold up to shoreline wind and which ones don't
- We know the older multi-flue stacks in Guilford and Essex usually need one custom cap rather than three separate ones

Chimney Crown Repair and Sealing
The chimney crown is the concrete or mortar surface that covers the top of a masonry chimney around the flue tile. A cracked chimney crown can let water enter the masonry even when the chimney cap above it is working correctly.
Chimney Crown Repair
Chimney crown repair is appropriate when the crown has cracks, localized spalling, failed edges, or deterioration that can still be repaired without full reconstruction. The repair has to address the physical defect before any protective coating is applied.
- Clean and prepare the affected surface
- Repair cracks and deteriorated areas that are within serviceable scope
- Restore water-shedding transitions where practical
- Use flexible exterior materials suited to seasonal movement and freeze-thaw conditions
Chimney Crown Sealing
Chimney crown sealing is used when the crown remains structurally sound but needs additional protection against water absorption. A deteriorated crown seal or unprotected surface can allow moisture into small pores and cracks that worsen through repeated freezing and thawing.
Sealing is not a substitute for structural repair. If a crown is too deteriorated for the repair scope we handle, we will explain that clearly and recommend the appropriate next step rather than coating over a failing surface.

Chimney Flashing Repair
Chimney flashing repair addresses water entry at the transition between the roof and chimney. Step flashing, counterflashing, apron flashing, back-pan details, seal joints, and the surrounding roofing all have to work together to move water around the chimney instead of behind it.
A chimney flashing leak may show as staining beside the fireplace, moisture on an adjacent wall, or water that appears only during wind-driven rain. Leaking chimney flashing is often difficult to identify from the ground because part of the system is covered by shingles or integrated into masonry joints.
We inspect the roof-to-chimney transition as part of exterior chimney diagnosis and repair the flashing when that is the source within our scope.
What If the Problem Extends Into the Roof?
If the inspection shows that the primary failure is in the surrounding shingles, roof decking, or a broader roof system rather than the chimney-side transition, we can refer that portion of the work to Roof Repair Pro.

Chimney Leak Repair and Water Intrusion Diagnosis
Chimney leak repair starts with one question: where is the water actually entering? A wet firebox or stain near a chimney can be caused by the cap, chase cover, crown, crown seal, masonry, flashing, surrounding roof, or a combination of exterior failures.
That is why we treat chimney water intrusion as a diagnostic service first. We inspect the exterior components in sequence, document what we find, and recommend the repair that matches the source.
What Causes Water to Leak Through a Chimney?
The most common exterior causes include:
Missing or Failed Chimney Caps
A missing chimney cap or a cap that no longer fits or sheds water correctly leaves the flue opening exposed to direct rain and debris.
Damaged Chimney Caps
A damaged chimney cap can be bent, corroded, loose, or partially detached while still appearing present from the ground.
Rusted or Failed Chase Covers
A failed or rusted chase cover can let water into a framed chimney chase through pinholes, seams, poor pitch, or openings around flue collars.
Cracked Chimney Crowns
Cracks and spalling can admit moisture directly into masonry and widen through freeze-thaw cycles.
Deteriorated Crown Seal
A serviceable crown can still absorb water when the protective surface has failed or worn away.
Masonry Water Intrusion
Upper exterior masonry and mortar joints can absorb or admit water when deterioration creates an open path. We diagnose this condition without positioning the company as a general masonry-restoration contractor.
Upper Chimney Deterioration
Loose or deteriorated exterior components near the top of the chimney can create water-entry points that are separate from the cap itself.
Wind-Driven Rain
Some chimneys only leak when storms push water sideways into vulnerable joints and transitions.
Animal or Debris Entry
Birds, small animals, leaves, and nesting material can enter unprotected openings and interfere with normal drainage or protection.
Flashing Problems
Flashing at the roof-to-chimney transition can fail even when the cap and crown are sound, which is why flashing is part of every relevant diagnosis.
How We Diagnose Exterior Chimney Water Intrusion
- Inspect the chimney cap or multi-flue cap for fit, corrosion, damage, and attachment.
- Inspect the chase cover when the chimney is framed and sided.
- Check the crown for cracks, deterioration, drainage, and the condition of any existing seal.
- Evaluate accessible upper exterior masonry for visible water-entry paths.
- Look for evidence that wind-driven rain is reaching a vulnerable joint or opening.
- Check for animal, bird, leaf, or debris entry at the chimney top.
- Inspect the chimney flashing and immediate roof-to-chimney transition.
- Identify the most likely entry point and explain the repair with photos before work begins.
What If the Leak Is Actually Coming From the Roof?
If water around chimney areas is primarily coming from failed shingles, roof decking, or a broader roofing problem, Chimney Cap Pro will not pretend that a chimney-top repair will solve it. That is a natural handoff to Roof Repair Pro for the roof-side scope.

Set flat, they hold water rather than shedding it. That standing water sits against thin galvanized metal until it rusts through from underneath, usually somewhere you can't see.
Animal and Bird Exclusion Chimney Caps
Animal and bird exclusion is handled through the chimney-cap service. A properly fitted cap with the right screening can help block birds, squirrels, leaves, and debris from entering the flue while maintaining appropriate venting.
If you are hearing animals or have birds nesting in chimney openings, the first step is determining whether the flue is actively occupied and what type of cap or guard is appropriate. We do not position the company as a general wildlife-removal service. The work stays focused on chimney-top protection and exclusion through proper capping.
Not Sure Which Exterior Chimney Service You Need?
That is normal. A stain near the fireplace does not tell you whether you need chimney cap replacement, chimney crown repair, chimney flashing repair, or chimney leak repair. The free estimate is designed to separate those possibilities.
We inspect the exterior components, take photos, explain the actual source, and give you a written fixed quote before you approve anything.

What We Do Not Build the Business Around
Chimney Cap Pro stays focused on exterior chimney protection and water intrusion. We do not provide chimney sweeping, creosote cleaning, flue cleaning, chimney liners, smoke chamber repair, fireplace restoration, wood stove service, gas fireplace service, interior fireplace work, or complex draft diagnostics.
We also do not use a leak diagnosis as an excuse to sell unrelated masonry or roofing work. If the problem falls outside our scope, we explain that and point you toward the right type of specialist.
How Does the Job Run?
You call or send the form and tell us what you are seeing. That might be a missing cap, water in the firebox, rust streaks, a chimney leaking when it rains, birds or animals, or simply concern about an older exterior component.
We come out and inspect the exterior. Depending on the chimney, that can include measuring the flue, checking the cap, reviewing the crown, inspecting the chase cover, evaluating flashing, and documenting the surrounding transition.
You get a written quote with photos. You can see what we saw and understand why a specific repair is being recommended.
Most straightforward installations and localized repairs are completed in one visit. Custom multi-flue chimney caps and fabricated chase covers typically require measurements first and installation after fabrication.
We clean up and provide photos of the finished exterior work.

Questions About Our Exterior Chimney Services
How long does chimney cap installation take?
Many straightforward single-flue installations and replacements can be completed in one visit. Custom chimney caps, multi-flue caps, and fabricated chase covers usually require measurement first and a return installation after the custom component is made.
Should I repair or replace my chimney cap?
Repair makes sense when the cap body is still sound and the problem is limited to hardware, screen, or attachment. Chimney cap replacement is usually the better choice when the metal is rusted through, badly deformed, missing, or incorrectly sized.
What is the difference between a chimney cap and a chimney chase cover?
A cap protects a flue opening. A chase cover protects the entire top of a framed chimney chase. Because the two components fail differently, the inspection first identifies which system your home actually has.
Can one cap cover more than one flue?
Yes. A multi flue chimney cap can cover multiple flue openings when the layout and clearances allow it. Custom fabrication is often used when standard individual caps would not fit correctly.
What is the difference between crown repair and crown sealing?
Chimney crown repair fixes physical deterioration such as cracks or localized spalling. Crown sealing protects a crown that is still structurally sound. Sealing should not be used to hide a crown that actually needs repair.
Why is my chimney leaking when it rains?
A chimney leaking when it rains can be caused by the cap, chase cover, crown, crown seal, masonry, flashing, or surrounding roofing. The pattern of the leak can offer clues, but a roof-level exterior inspection is usually needed to confirm the source.
Can you repair chimney flashing?
Yes. Chimney flashing repair is part of the exterior service scope when the water entry is at the roof-to-chimney transition. If the broader roofing system is the primary problem, we can refer the roof-side work to Roof Repair Pro.
Can a cap stop animals and birds from entering?
A properly fitted cap with appropriate screening can help prevent birds, squirrels, leaves, and other debris from entering the flue. Active protected bird nests must be handled according to applicable wildlife rules before exclusion work is completed.
Do you work through the winter?
Exterior work is weather dependent. We can inspect and complete many repairs during colder months when the roof is safe, while some coatings and sealants require suitable temperatures and dry conditions to cure correctly.
How soon can you come out?
Most normal estimates are scheduled within the same week when conditions and workload allow. Active exterior water entry, storm damage, or an open flue can be prioritized based on urgency and safe roof access.
Can Halloween rooftop decorations or string lights damage chimney cap screens and create openings for wildlife?
Yes. Halloween decorations can damage chimney cap screening if cords, clips, brackets, or decorations pull against the screen or cap during installation or windy weather.
Chimney cap mesh is designed to help keep birds, squirrels, and other animals out while allowing the chimney to vent properly. If decorative lights are wrapped through the screening or heavy decorations tug against the cap, the mesh can bend, separate from the frame, or develop a small opening.
For homes in Clinton and along the Connecticut Shoreline, Chimney Cap Pro recommends keeping seasonal decorations independent from the chimney cap. If the screen looks bent, loose, or separated after decorations are removed, it should be repaired before wildlife finds the opening.
Can squirrels, birds, or other small animals enter through a chimney cap with loose or damaged screening?
Yes. A chimney cap can still be attached to the chimney while damaged screening leaves enough space for birds, squirrels, or other small animals to enter.
The outer cap may look normal from the ground even when one side of the mesh has pulled away, rusted through, or become bent after wind or debris impact. Animals only need an accessible opening to get beneath the cap and into the flue or chimney structure.
Chimney Cap Pro checks the cap frame, screening, fasteners, and attachment points rather than looking only at whether the cap is still present. Repairing damaged screening helps restore the wildlife barrier without necessarily replacing an otherwise serviceable cap.
What should I do if I hear scratching or movement inside my chimney even though the chimney cap is still attached?
If you hear scratching or movement, do not assume the chimney is sealed just because the cap is still visible on top.
The screening may be damaged, the cap may have shifted, or an animal may have entered through another opening. Avoid using the fireplace or trying to drive the animal out with fire or smoke because that can injure the animal and create additional hazards inside the chimney.
Chimney Cap Pro can check the exterior cap and screening for an entry point. If an animal is confirmed inside, wildlife removal may need to be completed before the damaged cap or screen is repaired and the chimney is returned to normal use.
Can rusted screws or mounting brackets cause a chimney cap to shift during strong fall winds?
Yes. Corroded screws, clamps, or mounting brackets can weaken the chimney cap attachment and allow the cap to loosen or shift during strong winds.
Rust gradually reduces the strength of metal fasteners. A cap that feels secure during calm weather may begin rattling, tilting, or lifting when October and coastal storm winds place additional force on it.
Chimney Cap Pro checks both the cap and the hardware holding it in place on Clinton homes. If the cap itself remains sound, deteriorated mounting components may be repairable or replaceable before the cap becomes loose enough to expose the chimney opening.
Can standing water on a sagging chimney chase cover accelerate rust and eventually cause leaks?
Yes. Standing water on a low or sagging chase cover can accelerate corrosion and increase the chance that small rusted areas eventually become leak paths.
A properly shaped chase cover should direct rainwater away rather than allowing it to remain in low spots. When water repeatedly pools on the metal, protective coatings can deteriorate and corrosion may eventually produce pinholes or weakened seams.
Chimney Cap Pro looks at the shape of the chase cover as well as visible rust. If water is ponding after Connecticut Shoreline rainstorms, replacing a badly sagged or corroded cover may provide a more durable solution than repeatedly sealing individual rust spots.
Can rainwater enter around the chimney pipe collar even when the chase cover has no visible holes?
Yes. Water can enter around the chimney pipe or storm-collar connection even when the main surface of the chase cover has no visible holes.
The opening where the chimney pipe passes through the chase cover is a separate water-control detail. Failed sealant, a loose storm collar, corrosion around the penetration, or separation between components can allow rainwater to follow the pipe downward.
Chimney Cap Pro checks the pipe penetration, collar, surrounding metal, seams, and sealant when a Clinton chimney has unexplained moisture. A chase cover can look intact across most of its surface while the leak originates from this smaller transition.
Why are rust stains appearing on my chimney siding even though I haven't noticed any water inside the fireplace?
Rust stains can appear because water is already interacting with corroded chimney components even though the moisture has not yet reached a visible interior surface.
Runoff from a rusting chase cover, fastener, cap, or metal edge can leave orange or brown streaks down chimney siding. That staining may be an early exterior sign of deterioration rather than proof that the fireplace itself is already leaking.
Chimney Cap Pro checks where the staining begins and whether water is ponding, passing through a seam, or running off corroded metal. Catching the source at the exterior stage can help prevent the surrounding chase structure from being exposed to repeated moisture.
Can a small opening along the edge of a chase cover allow rainwater to damage the wooden chimney structure underneath?
Yes. Even a small separation along a chase-cover edge can allow repeated rainwater intrusion into the wooden chase below.
Water can move beneath the metal edge and reach sheathing, framing, trim, or other concealed wood. Because those components are hidden, deterioration can develop before there is an obvious fireplace leak or interior stain.
For Clinton and Connecticut Shoreline homes, Chimney Cap Pro looks for lifted edges, failed seams, corrosion, loose fasteners, and staining around the chase. Correcting the opening early can help prevent a small exterior defect from becoming a larger wood-repair problem.
